You don't have to have a subclass but you won't be any more or less powerful.

Disadvantage for not having a secondary profession: less variety in your build.

Having a secondary won't give you anything like health and energy, but instead it simply gives you more skill choices which allows for more variation in build concepts. Having no second profession is known as a 'pure' character.

It won't hurt to not have another profession, but it can cause enemies to think about all of the different build combos you might have.

No, your appearence and emotes are affected by your primary profession only and you can't use armor from your secondary profession either.

roleplaying. someone may wish for their character to be a pure ranger, at one with nature etc... or someone may like the idea of acting out a holy monk who is nevertheless interested in the dark arts of necromancy...

Well 2nd profession isn't needed, nor is there a disadvantage. I mean just check the attribute lines! If you be a Warrior/XX but would want to use Strenght, tactics and Swordsmanship (example) well then you wouldn't need a 2nd profession. But if you wanna heal yourself an easier way than using Healing Signet and you don't need/want tactics you could go Warrior/Monk with Strenght, Swordsmanship and Healing Prayers.....just another easy example: You wanna be a Warrior but you wanna wield a bow too, just go Warrior/Ranger then and get the Marksmanship attribute...the only advantages some classes have are their special attribute-lines. Ranger/Warrios won't be able to use Strenght as an example => There are NO disadvantages/advantages. ArenaNet just wants you to be exactly the character you want to be. Never played those wanna-be MMORGPS? Ragnarok as an example (not insulting it, it was fun but well...). You thought Knights look awesome etc but you wanted to use a bow aswell? Wasn't possible since without the mastery your bow would just suck...now you can mix up everything you want, that's Guild Wars!

I think you misunderstood me. I didn't mean to confuse your allies, but to confuse your foe. If an enemy looks at a pure Warrior, he or she is more likely to know the build then if it were a W/Me for example.

There is no real advantage from a secondary professions, but there is also no disadvantage. Either way is perfect.

The most common pure builds are Warriors and Monks. Many builds I see use all Monk skills and maybe one other skill like Glyph of Lesser Energy which decreases the amount of energy used in your next skill by 10 energy.
